Two odd things happened, this week, and they were all the odder, because they happened together.

On Wednesday, Daisy got a birthday card from a very, very old friend of mine, with whom I lost touch about eight or nine years ago. It must be five years since the last time I bumped into her on the bus (which I think happened twice). We shared houses at University, two years in a row (which means that she must have the patience of a saint, or else the people we lived with the first year were so awful that she didn’t notice how bad I could be). I use too many brackets. I will try to cut down.

Anyway, towards the end of my final year, she started seeing this guy, in that Can’t-Bear-To-Be-Apart-For-A-Minute way that happens when you first meet the love of your life. I wasn’t very understanding then - I’ve done it myself, since, of course, and irritated other people at least as much, so I’m a lot more sympathetic, but I got pretty cross and disproportionate at the time, and I imagine that was a major factor in our drifting apart almost as soon as we moved out of the house. In any case, we did.

So when Daisy got a birthday card not only from Shu, but from her husband and a daughter I knew nothing about, I was a bit stunned. I really wanted to follow it up, make the second move, as it were, but there were no contact details or anything, so all I could do was look at it, and go, “That’s really weird. Who told her?!”

Today, two days later, Daisy and I were struggling to fill the day - we’d tried Lynn, she was out, we’d tried Tess, she was out too, and a small contretemps around the confused road-markings where Queen’s Drive is closed, caused me to find myself driving off in the opposite direction to my house. I kind of shrugged, and decided to go to Otterspool instead. We got there, went for a little walk along the prom, and headed back to the car. Next to my car, a woman was manhandling a pram of the sort that I wish we’d bought (one of these, since you ask), except hers was an unusual colour, and as I was processing these thoughts, the woman caught my eye, and said, “Oh, hello!” And it was Shu.

I swear, it’s been years. What are the odds of just bumping into her like that, two days after we got a card right out of the blue?!

Anyway, with extensive persuasion(!) from me, she ditched the idea of her walk, and we went into the Otterspool for coffee instead, and spent a lovely hour or more catching up. I’ve learned that her baby is seven months old, and I’ve invited them round next week, and they’re coming, which is fab. It was really nice, and I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be back in touch.

In an effort not to ‘lose’ all our nights to the West Wing, we’ve decided to have at least one night a week where we do creative things, and as Monday is often the day where we are least tired, we’ve decided to call Monday night creativity night.

At first we are going to use this time as a way of venting our creative juices on things we always think we should get around to doing, so I am going to program, while Ruth is going to write.

Ok, I admit it, I don’t quite know how to pronounce it, never mind spell it, but we have (rather reluctantly on my part). Become addicted to Sudoku. Ruth decided to get the book while to while away a few hours while we where on the Isle of wight, and I sat around mocking at first, just for effect.

You see, I have an A’Level in Maths, and am generally a bit dismissive of logic puzzles, so I pretended to be above all this fitting numbers into boxes lark, ofcourse, I looked at one, and became totally hooked. No I am trying not to do more than one a day, and only when I really have the time, Daisy does some times look a bit perplexed when both mummy and daddy are looking intently at bits of paper, while she is trying to stand up for the first time.

statsOfficial government statistics show that 31% of people don’t believe government statistics.

am I the only person who appears to see the irony is this ? It’s obviously a made up number.

it seams the survey asked questions of quite an untrusting bunch, 59% said “you can’t be to careful when dealing with people. Which may explain why only 43% got the sources of their opinions from family or friends.

M,

You we’re right, I’ve read that post on this website (it’s gone now), and it very easy to read it totally the other way to what I meant to say. When I wrote it last night I was worried that if I carried on I would let my emotions get the better of me and say things I didn’t mean, when in reality, stopping when I did left it open to far to much interpretation.

I don’t for a moment doubt that you worked hard for the job, and I have total faith in the fact that it was a fair interview process. When I say I expected you to get the job, I did, but not because of any other reason that you have been doing it well for the past twelve months, I think it would be unfair to you if that wasn’t counted in the interview, and if I was in Normans position I would appoint the person with the most experience without question.

My anger isn’t towards you or the interview processed at all, if anything I was just angry that I wasn’t given an opportunity to apply for the post in the first instance, I felt that the decision twelve months ago to ring fence the maternity cover to cwis never gave me the opportunity to apply under different circumstances (not that I’m saying I would have got it then either, or infact that Kevin would have let me move, as we know when I then tried)

As I said, I didn’t think for a moment it wouldn’t be a fair interview process. to be honest, I am of the option that if you do a good enough job covering, they shouldn’t have to put the job out to interview, as the last 12 months for you will have been more rigorous than any interview could be.

In the end I went for the job mainly because I’ve always wanted it, and deep down I knew that, but deep down I think I always knew that you had the experience and qualities to take it, I was trying to talk my self down as not to get to upset at the end. I’m not sure that worked but hey ho.

Again I am sorry if I gave the impression that in any way you don’t deserve the job, it wasn’t my intention.

with your permission I would like to put this reply on the web site in place of that ‘post’, as I don’t want to leave it hanging in the balance and look like I just took off the comments because you asked me to, and people interpret that as any implicit belief in anything they thought it said.

- Kevin.

My sleep patterns are certainly in holiday mode anyway, even if Daisy’s aren’t, Ruth and I are currently taking turns to sleep in while the other does the morning with Daisy, who is still getting up at 6:30 every morning.

Yesterday was a bit changeable, with some very light drizzle, in the day, that turned into lovely sunshine once we’d writing the day tripping off and gone to Newport to do some shopping. Last night we got the moon shining across the water which is always a lovely sight to see.

Today we are planning a trip around Yarmouth, which is a bit of the island we tend not to visit much, but with another mixed day of weather ahead it does have quite a few possible indoor activities all within close vicinity of each other.

So I’ve applied for the job. I weighed it up, and in the end I’ve decided that it would be enjoyable, and would be challenging, and if there is something my current job, sometimes lacks is enjoyment and a challenge.

The only problem I had then was getting the application form back to the university, given I am currently encamped in a place that doesn’t even offer a gas supply or a decent mobile phone signal, never mind a internet connection. Last time we came John had this problem, which we solved by going to the nearest UKOnline centre which at was in Shanklin, because the Ventnor one had closed.

This morning I packed the laptop in the car, and popped down to Shanklin, only to find the UKOnline centre was now a sweet shop, bit of a problem their, so I went to the tourist information centre, to see where it had got too, it turns out it has gone to Sandown, but it was OK because as the woman at the tourist information centre said, “Zak’s got internet access”, I thought this was a bit ominous, that we knew that zak was the man to ask, what he was probably the first person with that elastic-trickery too.

I trudged off to the location of Zak’s which on closer inspection turned out to be the shop of the island nerd, filled to the gills with bits of radios, TV’s mobile phones, and 4 computers offering (shared) 1Mb internet Access! (context: we’ve got 4mb at home, and you can get 10mb now), so I asked Zak, if I could use some of his precious band width, and he kindly agreed, so after burning my application form to a CD on the laptop. Then I “logged” on to his internet PC’s which we’re obviously cutting edge for the island, and were running Windows 95, I mean it’s only just 10 years old.

It was good to see that Zak’s had its resident geek, who was sitting next to me, playing some sort of online geeky dungeons and dragons game, who then turned to Zak to tell him this piece of life changing information:
“Zak, I’ve worked out another use for the mordurp ring you found”,
“What”
“You need to be wearing it when you kill, fadarp the goonly”

I quickly finished my email to personnel, gathered my things and left the shop, I feel a bit dirty now, I’ll go and get a shower.
